Through March 3, new applicants can earn a $100 statement credit when they spend $100 in-store at Whole Foods Markets within two months of account opening. Plus, they’ll have the option of a Whole Foods card design for their wallet. The card’s ongoing rewards and other features remain the same:
5% back at Amazon and Whole Foods.
2% back at restaurants, gas stations and drugstores.
1% back on all other purchases.
Normally, in terms of a sign-up bonus, the Chase-issued Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card offers Amazon gift cards of varying amounts, awarded instantly upon approval. As of February, that amount was $70, and that option is still available to applicants who prefer it instead.
If you’re a current holder of the card and want to show your Whole Foods love, you can call and request a replacement card with the new design.
NerdWallet named the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card as one of the best credit cards of 2021. Its annual fee is $0, but in order to get it you must have an Amazon Prime membership, which costs $119 annually.
Is this a good bonus offer?
Of the two possible bonus options, the limited-time Whole Foods statement credit is more valuable — but a good bit less flexible. It’s probably the better choice if you already shop at Whole Foods, or can do so easily, and you know you’ll be spending at least $100 there.
That’s not very difficult to do; Whole Foods isn’t exactly a discount grocer. But even so, you don’t get the $100 credit unless you hit the $100 spending threshold. A one-time $97 Whole Foods run, for instance, won’t trigger any bonus, and online Whole Foods purchases don’t qualify.
If you don’t usually shop inside brick-and-mortar Whole Foods stores but you do a lot of spending on Amazon.com, a $70 gift card bonus could be a better choice. After all, Amazon sells basically everything — not just groceries — plus there is no minimum spending requirement for the gift card. You qualify for it upon approval.
